Heramaahina Eketone (Ngāti Maniapoto; Waikato) designed the beautiful artwork that adorned the Puaka Matariki Festival programme and promotions last year.
The whakaaro behind her design is navigation, whether through something in particular or life in general. The weaving illustrates how we are all woven together and that with the right tools, like our tīpuna, can sail the biggest oceans and can get through anything. The hand represents a fresh start for some, or tautoko for others.
Heramaahina teaches Kāwai Raupapa, an Introduction to the Māori Arts at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. You will find other examples of her work on the University of Otago website and at Te Tumu. A collaborative work on astronavigation was shown in last September’s Art and Space at Otago Museum.
